SBA Alumni Mentoring Program

Information for Alumni

What is it?

Alumni are the role models that can demonstrate all the possibilities open to students. The Alumni Mentoring Program is designed to connect alumni with students, and encourage alumni to share their expertise and experience with them. Your advice can help a student navigate the challenges of developing and successfully initiating their co-op and/or job search strategies and also provide guidance in choosing their career path. Each participating students' experience at Dalhousie is enhanced with the benefit of your insight.

Who can apply?

To apply to be an alumni mentor you must be a Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Management or MBA alumni with at least three years work experience since completion of your degree. Matches will be made based on student career preferences and alumni expertise.

Who are the students?

Students in the 3rd or 4th Year of the Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Management programs and all CRMBA students at Dalhousie can apply to become a mentee.

When will the program run?

The program will run formally from August to April for mentors matched with 1st year MBA students and October to April for all other mentor/mentee matches. The relationship may continue after this with agreement from both parties. Mentors and mentees will be given the opportunity to provide feedback on their experiences at the end of the program.

Guidelines

ContactRelationship Management
  • Students are responsible for initiating and maintaining contact with their alumni mentor.
  • Alumni mentors should expect to have 3 points of contact with the student each semester either by phone or email. In-person meetings can be suggested where appropriate.
  • The relationship is professional and won't necessarily result in a personal connection or friendship.
  • Be prepared for questions or discussion regarding career guidance, industry insight, resumes, cover letters, interview tips, etc.
  • The mentor's role is not to find the student their next job and your student should not ask you for a job.
  • Discussions between mentors and students are confidential.
